Tall Aviary

I have a new aviary in the house so we can have a song bird (or two) in the living room. My friend Cindy Sullivan of Haley's Cottage has a similar cage in her store and she got me this one. Isn't it gorgeous? I could wait to fill it when the Gloster Canaries have babies or I can fill it now! I'll let you guess which direction I am leaning...

If I were to fill it with birds other than Glosters I am considering a few different kinds. I would love your input! I am only considering finch or canary kind of birds versus any bird from the parrot family as  I believe that those birds should have a lot of handling and human interaction whereas finches and canaries do not wish to be touched or taken out of the cage very often.

My ideal bird for this space would be the Parisian Frill Canary. These are very pretty and elegant looking creatures IMO!
A pure white Parisian Frill

A grey (or brown I can't really tell) and white Parisian Frill
Parisian Frills are like Gloster Canaries in that they are considered type birds. This means that they are bred for a particular look versus color or song. If I could hop in my car and go get a parisian frill at Petsmart this morning the choice would be made but it seems like getting one of these birds in my choice color would require some patience, attendance of finch shows, and/or potentially shipping... Should I try to wait?

Martha Stewarts Aviary where she keeps Red Factor Canaries
The other choice is to do Red Factor Canaries in the new cage ala Martha Stewart! These birds are readily accessible and bred for their gorgeous and vivid color. This is what Mr. Z. wants to do. I just wish they came in pink!!! I have such an aversion to red!

Also to consider, is to do a bird in the new cage that is known for it's song verses color or general look. Even though it is clear that my male Gloster considers himself an amazing, amazing singer my ears are not convinced! I am also thinking about blue lovebirds...

What do you vote?

I really like the martha cage and think you should get that cage instead.
I don't know anything about birds so can't really make an opinion on them. If you get more than one type of bird when they all sing different will it sound really bad?
would be it then be better to get all the same so at least they are singing the same.

OMG Martha's cage is to die for isn't it? You can't really tell from the picture but it is humungous which is why she keeps over a dozen birds in there! Her cage is custom (but of course) and she had it designed after a vintage french model. She also has it in brown I think! It probably cost in the thousands! So I am def. going to stick with my version! I will prob only put one bird in it because the design isn't good for multiple birds.

A mixed melody of birds wouldn't sound bad at all. In fact it mimics nature :) They respond to each other and sing back in forth. Today is the worst day to consider bird song though because I have the worst headache and that loud Thomas Gloster and his bad singing is making it worse and worse! My cordon
blue finches were so quiet!

I love your new aviary and agree that i wouldn't want the red birds in there...they'll be to vivid for your decor. i think of you so often and still am missing you here in hingham...especially yesterday as I couldn't stop thinking of the valentine's dinner chocolate fountain!!!!!! so many hugs being sent your way! As much as you don't like the red in your decor (I'm agreeing to that) I did just want to remind you that Nana Hazel's favorite bird, according to Steve, is a red cardinal so...I'm always more partial to sentimentality when it comes to decorating (which is why my Christmas tree will never look the way I really want it because I can't part with some of the ornaments, even if their coloring kills me!)
I do LOVE that Parisian Frill - but, of course, I love anything Parisian ;o)
